3.1 Ordering Numbers

  1. Graph each number in the list on the given number line. List the numbers from smallest to largest.

    \(375 \%,-\frac{42}{11}, \sqrt{33},-0.19, \frac{9}{8}\)

A number line numbered from -7 to 7 with two intervals between integers.

-42/11 is to the right of the -4 scale mark. -0.19 is to the left of the zero scale mark. 9/8 is to the right of the 1 scale mark. 375% is to the right of the scale mark between 3 and 4. The square root of 33 is to the left of the -6 scale mark.

  2. Graph each number in the list on the given number line. List the numbers from smallest to largest.

    \(-0.45, \frac{4}{5},-1 \frac{3}{10},-\frac{7}{4}, \frac{\pi}{6}\)

A number line numbered from -2 to 1 with ten intervals between integers.

-7/4 is between the second and third scale marks to the right of -2. -1 and 3/10 is at the third scale mark left of -1. -0.45 is midway between the fourth and fifth scale marks left of zero. Pi divided by 6 is between the fifth and sixth scale marks right of zero, but closer to the fifth scale mark. 4/5 is at the eighth scale mark to the right of zero.

  3. Which box of Raisin Bran is the best buy? Justify your selection.
    1. 14-ounce box for $1.98
    2. 25-ounce box for $2.59
    3. 1-ounce mini box for $0.20
    4. 76-ounce box from Sam's Wholesale for $7.48

The 76-ounce box is the best buy because the price per ounce is the lowest at $0.098 per ounce.

  4. Compare each number to 0.05 using <, >, or =. Example: The given number is 0.13, so 0.13 > 0.05
    1. 0.004 0.0004 < 0.05
    2. 0.0921 0.0921 > 0.05
    3. 0.0001 0.0001 < 0.05
    4. 0.3863 0.3863 > 0.05
  5. Compare each number to 0.10 using <, >, or =.
    1. 0.9072 0.9072 > 0.10
    2. 0.0032 0.0032 < 0.10
    3. 0.01 0.01 < 0.10
    4. 0.1056 0.1056 > 0.10
  6. Determine whether the given number is less than -2.0.
    1. -2.5 yes
    2. -3.1 yes
    3. -0.4 no
    4. -1.9 no
  7. Determine if the given number is within the interval (0.58, 0.74).
    1. 0.65 yes
    2. 0.53 no
    3. 0.73 yes
    4. 0.8 no
  8. Determine if the given number is within the interval (47.6, 51.2).
    1. 42 no
    2. 45.9 no
    3. 50 yes
    4. 49.35 yes
